How Often Should You Replace Your Mattress? (and Signs It’s Time for a New One)

To stay healthy and focused during the day, most adults need 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep at night. An average of 8 hours of sleep a night is a lot of time to spend in one position or in one single spot. Since so much time every day is spent in the same little area, it makes perfect sense to ensure that the surface you sleep on is well-equipped to suit your body.

One of the best things you can do to ensure good quality rest and to stay comfortable is to replace your mattress at the right time. Let’s take a look at when to replace a mattress and some of the signs that your mattress isn’t suitable for you.

How Often Should You Replace Your Mattress

The functional lifespan of a mattress can depend on many factors. For starters, a poor-quality mattress won’t last nearly as long as a high-quality mattress. Even the finest mattresses usually only last about 7 to 10 years before they need to be replaced. A cheap-quality mattress usually needs to be replaced much sooner.

Mattress type can also have a huge impact on its longevity. Generally speaking, Innerspring mattresses usually last about 7 - 8 years. Memory foam mattresses may last about 8 - 10 years. Hybrid mattresses usually may last about 7 - 10 years.

There are, of course, a couple of other factors that can affect the lifespan of your bed. Factors like overloading the mattress capacity, moisture, or other types of damage can wear down your mattress prematurely.

Signs It's Time for a New Mattress

If you suspect that your mattress is worn down but are not sure, then the best thing to do is to look for the signs of wear. Here is a quick look at some of the most important tell-tale signs that it is time to refresh your mattress.

  1. Sagging or Unevenness

There can be a certain acceptable indentation in your mattress. If you notice more than 2.5cm or 25mm of indentation, sagging, or dents, it is a clear sign that you may need a replacement. Rotate your mattress, and if you feel the same indentation, then you may need a new mattress.

  1. Visible Wear and Tear

Mattresses will become visibly worn down over time. If you notice lots of fraying of the fabric, see stitches loosen up at the corners, or notice any coils poking through then it certainly is time for a replacement.

  1. Stains That Won’t Come Out

Stains on the mattress surface won’t affect its functionality, but it does look questionable and unhygienic. If the mattress has a lot of bad stains that won’t come out with deep cleaning, then you should consider a fresh new mattress.

  1. Noisy Springs or Creaking Sounds

Move around on the mattress. Do you notice any creaking, squealing, or noisy spring sounds? If the answer is yes, then you need to start saving up for a new mattress.

  1. Allergies and Asthma

Mattresses that are infested with dust mites can make asthma or allergies a lot worse. If your sinuses always start to feel stuffy at night, then consider a fresh new mattress. Something hypoallergenic is preferable if you often struggle with asthma or allergies.

  1. Pains and Aches

A poor quality mattress can cause a lot of body pains and aches in areas like the hips, lower back, upper back, or joints. If you find yourself waking up sore, then it might be best to upgrade to a mattress that will offer more support.
