How To Choose The Right Bed Size - A Guide to Help You Decide

Mattress sizes matter a great deal. If you have ever endured a night of uncomfortable sleep due to a lack of space, you will know exactly what we are talking about.

When the bed is too small, you might need to give up your favourite sleeping position - an already awkward prospect. You also face terrible back pain and the likelihood of a terrible neck strain.

Choosing the right mattress size is vital for your comfort and for avoiding body pains and aches. But choosing the perfect size isn’t always as simple. Let’s take a look at what to keep in mind when you upgrade your bed and how you can make the smartest bed size decision.

A Peek at NZ Bed Sizes

You might want to take note of NZ’s standard bed sizes, especially if you are still planning your bedroom layout and want to retain some movement efficiency. Here is a quick look at the standard for mattress sizes in NZ.

  • The Single - 92cm x 188cm

  • The Long Single - 92cm x 203cm

  • The King Single - 107cm x 203cm

  • The Double Delight - 138cm x 188cm

  • The Queen Option- 153cm x 203cm

  • The King - 168cm x 203cm

  • The Luxurious Super King - 183cm x 203cm

  • The Deluxe California King - 203cm x 203cm

Tips for Choosing a Practical Mattress Size

Even the most luxurious and biggest of beds can sometimes be impractical in your current home and with your current lifestyle. Let’s take a look at some practicality concerns.

How Much Space Do You Have?

The idea of a mattress that stretches wall-to-wall can be appealing - perhaps even tempting. But eventually this will get old. You will start facing issues like difficulty keeping the space tidy. Or there could be too little room for other accessories like bedside tables, a desk, or even space to get dressed comfortably.

Ideally, there should be at least 50 - 75 cm of space at the sides of the bed where you walk. A 60-90 cm gap at the foot of the bed is also best, especially if you need to open drawers or closets.

Who Will Enjoy The Bed?

The next important factor is who will be snuggling up in bed. Is it for a single individual? A single individual and a pet? A couple? A couple with pets? Or are you planning on enjoying cosy social Sunday settings as a family? Here are some tips to help you choose.

Children and Teens - Single or King Single beds can be sufficient. Unless kids are sharing, there usually is no need for anything bigger than a Double.

For Solo Adults - Individual adults tend to prefer a Double bed, although a King Single can be just as cosy if you are pressed for space. Opt for a Queen if you have the space to spare and want a little bit more comfort.

For Couples - Couples usually find double beds too cramped. A Queen is the smallest you should consider. King beds, Super Kings, or California Kings are a prime choice if you have the space for it.

Taller Individuals - No one likes to sleep with their feet hanging off the bed. Investing in an XL or extended-length bed will make all the difference over the years.

Co-Sleeping Families - Sharing with kids and pets usually means you will get pushed off the mattress at some point. It is best to spend a little bit more and choose King sized or bigger.

Budget Concerns

The bigger the bed, the higher the bill. Added features like an advanced design can also cost more. For many people, it is better to get a higher-quality mattress rather than a large, cheap mattress. The added support can compensate for your lack of space.

Thinking Ahead Is Always Important

A good mattress can last well over 10 years. Because of this, it is usually best to think ahead and buy something that might suit the future you instead of the current you. If you are planning to share the bed down the line, then it is always better to upsize.
